The 1-2-2 Regular is the default offensive zone forecheck. One man hunts, two men hold the walls, two men hold the line. It gives up almost nothing up the middle and turns their breakout into a wall play we are already standing on.
Reading the diagram The net we are attacking is at the top of the board and their blue line is at the bottom. The black **X** is their D retrieving the puck in the corner, with the puck sitting just off his stick.
- **F1** is above the goal line on the puck side and the red arrow is his route: an angled sprint at the retriever, taking away the strong-side wall and forcing him to move the puck under pressure. - **F2** sits in the strong-side circle. He is the wall man on the pressure side, ready to jump the first pass to their winger. - **F3** is on the weak side at the inside edge of the far circle. He covers the middle first and the far wall second. - **D1 and D2** hold the offensive blue line, one on each side. They kill the stretch pass and stand on any puck chipped out.
How it plays out F1 angles, the puck goes to a wall, and the nearest F is already there to eliminate it. If the puck goes D-to-D behind the net, F1 keeps hunting on the new side, F2 and F3 shift with the puck, and the D slide across the line together.
What to look for
- F1 angles the retriever, never skates straight at him
- F2 and F3 own the walls, not the middle of the ice
- Both D hold the blue line to kill stretch passes
Coaching cues
- Take a side, take away a side
- Wall men stay above the puck
- D up, feet moving on the line
Common mistakes
- F1 overskating the puck and opening the strong-side wall
- Two forwards chasing the same puck
- D backing off the line and giving up the neutral zone for free
