The 1-2-2 Passive gives up the retrieval and takes away the exit. Nobody goes below the goal line. We set up at the top of the circles, let them start their breakout, then attack the puck once it is on a wall or a stick that is already moving.
Reading the diagram Net we are attacking at the top, their blue line at the bottom. Notice how much higher everyone sets up than in the other looks — the **X** with the puck is already up near the circle before we touch him.
- **F1** is between the circles at the top of the zone. The red arrow shows him pressuring the puck carrier only once the puck is above the goal line. - **F2** and **F3** sit at the bottom of each circle, taking away both walls at the point where the breakout has to pass. - **D1 and D2** stand on the blue line — this is a hold-the-line forecheck, not a hunt.
How it plays out We are trading forechecking pressure for structure. There is no gap for them to skate through: the walls are taken, the middle is taken, and F1 arrives late but with support behind him. Use it late in shifts, protecting a lead, or against a team with fast, skilled D.
What to look for
- Nobody goes below the goal line
- Pressure starts at the top of the circles
- Both D hold the blue line and stay up
Coaching cues
- Contain, do not chase
- Wait for the puck to come to you
- Feet stopped is a turnover — stay on your toes
Common mistakes
- F1 breaking structure and chasing low
- Setting up too deep and giving up the middle
- Standing flat-footed instead of shading with the puck
