Defensive Zone Coverage Overview

A defensive zone system answers one question: who is responsible for whom, and where does that change. A hybrid package answers it with three parts.
Below the tops of the circles, coverage is hybrid: three players play a 3-on-3 down low with man-style responsibility, while the two remaining forwards hold a zone above them.
Above the tops of the circles, coverage is man. Once the puck crosses that line, every player takes a body. The tops of the circles is the line of demarcation, and it is the single most important teaching point in the system - the coverage changes at a fixed landmark, not at a judgment call.
In selected situations the team swarms the puck, deliberately outnumbering the carrier to force a turnover instead of containing.
At 4v4 and 3v3 the system simplifies to pure man coverage at all times, with support coming from the nearest player. The reason is space: with fewer bodies, zone responsibilities leave players guarding empty ice.
